The Víctor Ullate Ballet presents Carmen
with the Orchestra and Choir of the Community of Madrid
at the Teatro Principal, Alicante
A 21st century Carmen
More than a century after its premiere, this new proposal aims to move away from the common clichés to delve into the essence of history and shed new light on one of the most polyhedral characters in contemporary fiction: Carmen.
To do this, an update was necessary: recreating a timeless and different space; and a revision: because a piece that is more than a century old, needs a new and audacious look, but absolutely respectful of the essence of history. The staging and costumes, modern and timeless, have been proposed on this basis.
Victor Ullate, an international dance star, founded the company that bears his name in 1988 and has a long and prolific career. Víctor Ullate is the director and has had Eduardo Lao as artistic director since 1999. The talent and effort of both artists are key to the permanence and success of this exceptional company. From the very moment of its creation, the Víctor Ullate Ballet became the first Spanish private company on an international level, with star dancers and an emblem of dance in Spain. Throughout these 25 years, the rigour and the exigency have supported the selection and training of dancers, the choice and creation of choreographies, the creativity and the level of the shows.
